During the 100 year memorial expedition to honour Roald Amundsen -
The 22.2.2011 the “Berserk” with Captain Tom Gisle Bellika, Leonard James Banks and Robert Skaanes left Horse Shoe Bay and sailed into a forecasted storm in Mc Murdo Sound after correspondance with HMNZ Wellington, and disappeared in the Storm. Norwegian and New Zealand Polarauthoroties pressed criminal charges to the “Berserk”expedition due to what they claimed was illegal anchorage, illegal sail and breach of the Antarctic treaty regulations. The important keyquestions and the official logged correspondance between the “Berserk”crew – HMNZ Wellington and the scientific bases in the Mc Murdo Sound prior to the tragedy remains unanswered, but the search for answers continues.
“To Paul Watson and the crew onboard the Steve Irwin – words cannot express our thankfulness and gratitude to your tremendous efforts to search our friends – and shipmates in the Ross Sea. When the New Zealand navy decided to hide their traces and leave - you decided to head into the storm and did all in your power to assist our missing brothers. The families of the missing sailors, Samuel Massie and I will always remember and honour your efforts and great spirit of the seas.
